Sleep problems such as insomnia impact energy, concentration, mood, and overall health.
Sleep, Stress & the Brain
Sleep plays a vital role in helping the brain recover from stress. Throughout the day, worries, negative thoughts, and emotional experiences build up—often described as filling a “stress bucket.” During Rapid Eye Movement (REM), also known as the dream phase of our sleep, the brain processes these experiences, reducing their emotional intensity and helping you wake up feeling clearer and more balanced.
When stress levels are high, the emotional brain (including the amygdala and hypothalamus) becomes more active, increasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This keeps the mind on high alert, making it harder to switch off. The brain is very protective of this process—REM sleep is essential but also energy-intensive. If the brain tries to process too much at once, it may briefly wake you during the night to prevent overloading. At other times, it may allow extended REM processing, which can leave you feeling exhausted even after a full night’s sleep.
This creates a cycle of poor sleep, increased stress, and reduced emotional resilience.

By improving sleep quality, the brain can process stress more effectively, helping you wake feeling calmer, clearer, and more in control.
